Economy

One thing that’s clear from talking to members of the community is the connection between the economy and immigration. Most experts say economic opportunities drive immigration. These immigrant populations in turn grow the economy and create additional opportunities for others. Numerous businesses, particularly in high-tech industries, have been founded by immigrants and half of all engineers with a PhD are immigrants.

While there are many economic benefits to immigration, some question if there are potential negative side effects. How will large numbers of immigrants affect American wages? Are immigrants, specifically low-skilled or undocumented immigrants, a drain on public resources?

Some studies emphasize the positives, while others stress the negatives. The answer probably lies somewhere in between, but finding that balance is going to take an honest community conversation.
