The 14th Amendment – Roundtable
The Homeland project is about getting our community together to talk about immigration. There seems to be a lot of noise around this issue and not enough conversation, not enough of your voice. So we started this roundtable series—we invite perfect strangers to come to various St. Louis restaurants and discuss specific topics pertaining to immigration.
This roundtable was about the debate surrounding the birthright citizenship clause of the 14th amendment. We filmed this at Café Ventana and our guests were John Ammann (Saint Louis University School of Law), Chris Borgerson (entrepreneur), James Buford (Urban League), Suzanne LeLaurin (International Institute of St. Louis) and Lindsey Rendlen (law student).
This group seemed to think that both media and politicians use the 14th amendment as a bit of a “red herring.” Do you know what the 14th amendment is? Do you think the citizenship clause should be repealed?

Great discussion. I would like to be part of something like this. Outside of the education issue, I believe that immigration is the second most important problem facing America today. And I agree with one of the speakers that we either enforce the laws on the books or we don’t. There needs to be some form of addressing the economic problem which is why most people come to our country and enforcing our laws too.
