“Immigrant” Defined
As we’ve met with the community to talk about immigration, one thing we’ve learned is that it’s really hard to understand U.S. immigration policy and regulations, and even to know what the real definitions to certain terms are.
If we can better understand the nuts and blots of immigration, perhaps we can find common ground to have a real conversation about it. With that thought we are working with the community to develop a set of resources. We thought we’d start with the basics: the vocabulary of immigration.
To help us we turned to an expert from the community, attorney Jalesia (Jasha) F. McQueen Gadberry. A little bit about Jasha from Jasha herself:
We’ll start our look at the language of immigration with, fittingly, the word “immigrant”:
Jalesia F. McQueen Gadberry (Jasha), who is a second-generation immigrant and is fluent in Spanish, is owner and attorney of the St. Louis-based law firm, McQueen Gadberry LLC. Her practice areas focus on general corporate law, immigration and international law, which assists business people and globally-minded individuals. An active community member, she currently holds a federal appointment to the Missouri Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, a state appointment to the Missouri Hispanic Business Trade and Culture Commission, and is a member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis. This series of immigration resources should not be considered legal advice.
